When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like "Avatar"?

Critics have called alien epic Avatar a version of Dances With Wolves because it's about a white guy going native and becoming a great leader. But Avatar is just the latest scifi rehash of an old white guilt fantasy.

Spoilers... )

I thought that this was an interesting article since so many ONTD members have been making this same point about the movie ever since the plot was revealed.

I love these boys, but these pics look like bad outtakes that didn't make the cut of a high school yearbook. Anyway, here's a little behind-the-scenes video from the shoot in which Evans mentions his favorite piece of clothing is his Superman underwear. Now that's a photo shoot I want to see.

Some Kish spoilers for the holidays... )

Patrick Stewart—Star Trek's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Charles Xavier—will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror.

In addition to appearing in films, Stewart has been spending much of the last decade performing on the British stage. He is to be knighted by the queen on this year's New Year's Honours list. (The news isn't official yet; the newspaper bases its report on anonymous sources.)

Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

If he is knighted, Stewart will join fellow X-Men star Ian McKellen.

'KANYE IS HUMBLE'

Daniel Merriweather has claimed that Kanye West doesn't deserve his negative reputation.

West caused controversy earlier this year when he interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards to say that Beyoncé should have won.

However, Merriweather, who supported West in Australia, told Now: "He's completely opposite to that in person."

He added: "Kanye's a really nice guy and quite humble... I think when the cameras are on he kind of plays out a role that people expect him to play out.

"But he's actually a really good guy."

James Cameron and 20th Century Fox’s Avatar won the weekend box office despite heavy snowstorms that slowed audiences in the northeast. At least that’s the angle every other outlet is taking on its slightly lower start. It’s the snow’s fault.

Talks about how damn expensive Avatar was... )

Mother of God, Avatar was so amazing.

The news came in numbers and the numbers were fairly grim, all the grimmer for being unsurprising. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll reported this week that more than half of Americans, 55%, think America is on the wrong track, with only 33% saying it is going in the right direction. A stunning 66% say they're not confident that their children's lives will be better than their own (27% are).

It is another in a long trail of polls that show a clear if occasionally broken decline in American optimism. The poll was discussed on TV the other day, and everyone said those things everyone says: "People are afraid they'll lose their jobs or their houses." "It's health care. Every uninsured person feels they're one illness away from bankruptcy."

All too true. The economy has always had an impact on the general American mood, and the poll offered data to buttress the reader's assumption that economic concerns are driving pessimism. Fifty-one percent of those interviewed said they disapproved of the president's handling of the economy, versus 42% approving.

But something tells me this isn't all about money. It's possible, and I can't help but think likely, that the poll is also about other things, and maybe even primarily about other things.

Sure, Americans are worried about long-term debt and endless deficits. We're worried about taxes and the burden we're bequeathing to our children, and their children.

But we are concerned about other things, too, and there are often signs in various polls that those things may dwarf economic concerns. Americans are worried about the core and character of the American nation, and about our culture.

It is one thing to grouse that dreadful people who don't care about us control our economy, but another, and in a way more personal, thing to say that people who don't care about us control our culture. In 2009 this was perhaps most vividly expressed in the Adam Lambert Problem. More on that in a moment.

More lulz behind the cut )

Candids: Megan Fox's Boyfriend Putting Belongings In Moving Van

Here’s a piece of late-breaking News: Brian Austin Green was seen earlier today by the paps hauling all of his stuff out of his house! That’s right, Brian called up the movers and scooted a bunch of stuff into a moving truck. Megan was nowhere in sight during the move as Brian packed additional things into his car.

What does this all mean, you ask? We don’t know the answer to that but we can only speculate that it has nothing to do with Megan. YET.

The Rolling Stones are reportedly planning to drop Ronnie Wood from a possible 2010 tour unless the musician can fully kick his alcohol addiction. The legendary band is rumoured to be plotting a series of concerts next year, but the plans have reportedly been marred by Wood's recent personal problems. The rocker walked out on his wife of 23 years, Jo, last year after his affair with 21-year-old Russian waitress Ekaterina Ivanova was exposed in the press. The former couple recently divorced and Wood's relationship with Ivanova ended this month following a public bust-up which saw the musician arrested on suspicion of assaulting his lover. Ivanova has since accused Wood of letting his drink problem spiral out of control, and British newspaper the Daily Mail is now reporting that the star's bandmates are also concerned about his boozing. The publication claims Wood could now be left out of a possible Rolling Stones tour if they are unable to secure insurance for the star, because it was his ex-wife who always managed to keep him healthy for their previous shows. A source tells the newspaper, "Mick (Jagger, frontman) has always relied on Jo to be his conduit through to Ronnie - he has relied on her to get Ronnie to work, to keep him well enough to pass a medical for the tour. Without Jo, Ronnie would never have managed to go on tour, you can't do it without insurance, and you won't get insurance without the medical. It's always been up to Jo to get him through all that. All communication has gone through Jo for years, so now Mick has washed his hands of Ronnie. The feeling is that he can't come back after this one. Ronnie has always been a bit lost, and, without Jo, nobody can reach him." Sauce

Sarah Jessica Parker has apparently revealed that she finds BO sexy and is working on bottling the scent in a new fragrance.

The Sex And The City star told WENN that the genderless perfume is yet to be named and was inspired by human odour.

She said: "It has taken me three years to decide on the scent because I really like BO and I think it's sexy. I wanted to figure out a way to make it palatable to everybody. I was like, 'How do you get BO in a bottle and make an atomiser of it?'

"Then it was all about trying to capture the sense of naughtiness in a bottle that it would be good for a man and a woman."

It is understood that the fragrance's launch would come after the release of Parker's third "party in a bottle" scent - SJP NYC - which is due to arrive in Macy's stories in February.
